Pain, Patience and Prayer

Every human experiences ups and downs in life. There’s no shame in expressing your hurt and sadness. It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to feel down. You don’t have to pretend that everything is fine when it isn’t. Everyone goes through tests and trials. Even prophets and the righteous people who came before us were tested. They also felt pain and sadness. They were hurt by the people around them. They lost their children, their health and things that were dear to them. But no matter what happened, they never lost their faith in Allah. They remained hopeful that Allah would reward them for their patience and replace what they lost with something much better.

When Prophet Yaqoob (peace be upon him) was told that his son, Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him), had been eaten by a wolf, he was overwhelmed with such grief that he lost his eyesight.

…And he lost his sight because of the sorrow that he was suppressing.{Surah Yusuf verse 84}

It is part of our nature as humans to feel sad when lose something we love. It is natural to grieve. Our beloved prophets experienced such intense sadness but they did not lose hope in Allah. Instead, they would call out to Him in prayer and ask for His help because they knew that Allah was their protector and helper. They understood that relief came only from Allah. Their hearts were full of hope and they remained patient until their difficulty was replaced with ease.

And your Lord says: Call upon Me; I will respond to you. {Surah Ghafir verse 60}

But Allah is your protector, and He is the best of helpers.{Surah Ali Imran verse 150}

…so patience is most fitting… {Surah Yusuf verse 18}

In nature, you will find many beautiful examples of letting go and having patience. When autumn arrives, leaves fall from the trees. Allow the heavy burden you carry everywhere you go to fall from your shoulders. Trust that Allah will help you with whatever you are struggling with. Let your worries go. Everything is in the Hands of Allah. When you are being taken care of by Allah, you have nothing to worry about.

Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. {Surah An’am verse 59}

When winter arrives, flowers tuck themselves beneath a blanket of snow. For a little while, they are covered by darkness until the sun melts the snow and they bloom once again. The darkness you are in will soon be replaced by light. Stay strong and have a little more patience. You will soon find a way out of the darkness. You will grow from the pain. Trust Allah’s plan for you. He is with you during your times of weakness and strength. You are never alone.

Allah is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light. {Surah Al-Baqarah verse 257}

…He is with you wherever you are…{Surah Al-Hadid verse 4}

Everything has its time and place. Every moment of sadness and every tear drop has been written by Allah. You will be rewarded for all of your patience as you wait for relief. Hardships are temporary, but the reward for being patient lasts forever. Allah sends down his blessings and mercy on those who remain patient when they are faced with a calamity. Realise that this world and everything in it will not last forever. We are only guests in this life, resting here for a short time. We will soon return to our Creator. Have hope that Allah has something much better than anything you lose in this world.

Verily, with every difficulty there is relief.{Surah Ash-Sharh verse 6}

Our life in this world is like that of a travellor who is lost in a desert. You have your most beloved possessions with you on this journey in the scorching hot desert. After wandering around for a while, you realise that you have lost your beautiful diamond ring. You feel upset because this ring was very special to you. So you being to retrace your steps, trying to look for it. Soon after, you find an oasis with cool, refreshing water. You are overwhelmed with happiness. Once you drink the water, you are filled with so much pleasure and relief that you forget about your loss. You no longer feel sad, but instead your heart swells with gratitude for having found something much better than what you have lost. Imagine, how you will feel once you enter paradise. That is where you will find the relief and peace your heart has always longed for.

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
Who, when disaster strikes them, say, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.”
Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.{Surah Al-Baqarah verses 155-157}

When you feel down, take a deep breath in. Then deeply breathe out. Remember who is in control of everything. Who is allowing your lungs to expand? You may feel trapped in a difficulty, but remember that Allah can easily open a door and a way out for you, just as He opens your lungs to fill them with air.

…And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out. {Surah At-Talaq verse 2}

Don’t be ashamed to shed tears, especially to Allah. He listens to the silent prayers of your heart. He understands. Your prayers are never lost. He answers them all, in ways we may or may not understand. One day you will look back and be thankful for everything Allah gave you. You will look back and wonder what you ever did to deserve all the beautiful blessings you were given. Remember to say Alhamdulillah (All praise is to Allah). Remind yourself of the reward Allah has prepared for those who are patient. And find comfort in His words which give us so much hope. Your Creator wants you to find relief in Him; He wants your heart to find rest.

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.{Surah Ar-R’ad verse 28}

One day when you are in paradise, you will feel so thankful for all the hardships you went through that strengthened your faith and brought you closer to Allah. That is the day your soul will be content. You will finally realise that all the pain, the tears and every time you suffered was all worth it. It will all be worth a blissful, permanent home in paradise.

O reassured soul,
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
And enter among My [righteous] servants
And enter My Paradise.{Surah Al-Fajr verses 27-30}
