Smile, it’s Sunnah!

Asalamu Alaykum everyone,

I hope you’re all in a good mood because I’ve got some amazing discoveries to share with you. And don’t worry if you’re not feeling so great today because I intend to change that and put a smile on your face. Let’s begin…

What’s a smile?

A smile is a facial expression that can be understood by everyone,  despite the diversity of our cultures, races and ethnicities. It doesn’t matter what colour you are, where you were born or even what language you speak, a smile is a language we all share compassionately.

Scientifically speaking, a smile occurs when muscles in your cheeks contract and pull the corners of your mouth upwards. When a smile is genuine, the muscles around your eyes contract, forming small wrinkles on the outer corners of your eyes. You’ll notice that people smile with their eyes when they truly feel happy.

Why should we smile more?

Smiling comes with its own rewards.

These are some of the ways that smiling benefits you:

  • It improves your mood
  • It’s good for your heart
  • It reduces stress
  • It boosts your immune system
  • You will seem more sociable, easy-going and relaxed
  • It allows you to build stronger relationships
  • It doesn’t cost a penny
  • It helps you stay positive

And let’s not forget:

  • It’s Sunnah 😁

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and he encouraged us to smile too. He was the leader of the Muslims. He had an important duty to carry out and that was to deliver the message of Allah to all of mankind. This was not an easy mission. We all know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) faced hostility from the disbelievers of Makkah. Despite all the pressure he faced and the responsibilities he had as a leader, a father, a teacher and a role model (and much more!), he smiled wholeheartedly.

Abdullaah Ibn Haarith said: “I have never seen anyone more in the habit of smiling than Allah’s Messenger.” [Tirmidhi]

Isn’t it strange that some Muslims today walk around with a perpetual frown on their faces as if they have nothing in their lives to be happy about. Relax! It’s not haram to enjoy life; just make sure you enjoy it the halal way.

Sure, there will be days when you feel like the world has turned upside down. But trust me, when you remember the things that are going right, you will find that they are more than you can count. Perhaps, if you were to count your troubles, your fingers and toes would be enough. But if you were to number every little blessing you have, from the cells functioning in your body to keep you alive, to the sun that provides the earth with light, you would certainly need more hands and feet. You can write them down if you think it will help. Sometimes, we just need a reminder. It’s easy to take things for granted. But if you appreciate what you have now, Allah says,

“If you are grateful, I would certainly give to you more…” {Surah Ibrahim Verse 7}

I don’t know about you, but I definitely think that’s something to smile about!

There is always something beautiful, something to be grateful for, in every day. And if you don’t believe me, look at the faces of the poor and needy who smile even when they have nothing, as if they have everything in the world. They don’t need diamonds and gold to be happy. Have you ever noticed that the most miserable of people are usually those who live the most luxuriously? Most of them are depressed, hooked on drugs or suicidal. Yet, they seem to ‘have it all’. What does this worldly life and everything in it have in common with a shadow? They are both temporary. So when we run after things of this world, hoping to find happiness, it’s no different from chasing a shadow. Remember, true contentment can never be found in material things. It’s only found in the peace of the heart.

More reasons to smile:

Smile when you gaze at the stars; you have been blessed with the gift of sight. Smile in the face of a baby; new life is a blessing and miracle from Allah. Smile to comfort a child; you too were once afraid of the big world. Smile when you feel the drops of rain roll down your face; the rain is a blessing that benefits everything on Earth. Smile when you are reminded about Allah; He sent someone your way to water the seed of faith in your heart. You were most in need of it and He answered the plea of your weakened soul. Don’t you realise how special you are? He takes care of you in the most beautiful ways. Do you feel the tranquility? It will touch your heart when you reflect deeply on the blessings you have. Now smile, because there is so much in your life to love.❤️
